Following the entry into force on 5 October 2020 of the Italian law on the ratification and implementation of the 2004 Protocols to amend the Paris Convention on Third Party Liability in the Field of Nuclear Energy (the “Paris Convention”) and the Brussels Supplementary Convention to the Paris Convention, all the Contracting Parties are ready to ratify the 2004 Protocols, except for Turkey (only a party to the Paris Convention), whose legislative process should be finalised in the near future.
The Contracting Parties to the Paris Convention met remotely on 16 October 2020 to discuss the final steps towards the ratification of the Protocols. In order to enter into force, the 2004 Protocol to amend the Paris Convention requires that two-thirds of the Contracting Parties deposit their instruments of ratification, while the 2004 Protocol to amend the Brussels Supplementary Convention requires that all the Contracting Parties deposit their instruments of ratification. The Protocols shall come into force upon fulfilment of these requirements.
