NEA Director-General William D. Magwood, IV and senior staff met with the leading officials from the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan (METI) on 19 November 2020.
The mission provided an opportunity to meet with Yota Ono, the new Director-General for Energy and Environmental Policy at the METI Agency for Natural Resources and Energy (ANRE). Discussions covered a wide range of issues, including the decarbonisation of electricity systems, as well as high-level radioactive waste and spent fuel management. This virtual visit also gave opportunities to exchange updates on Fukushima research and development.
The dialogue also touched on the upcoming NEA International Mentoring Workshop in Science and Engineering, which will be held virtually on 15-17 December 2020 in co-operation with the Nuclear Damage Compensation and Decommissioning Facilitation Corporation (NDF). The event will bring together 50 female high-school students from Fukushima with highly accomplished women mentors.
The NEA looks forward to continue enhancing its engagement with Japan and collaborating further on nuclear safety, policy and research.
