Regulatory implementation of equivalent dose limit for the lens of the eye for occupational exposure

Eye dose limits

On 7 March 2022, the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) will host a webinar  to launch its new report  “Regulatory Implementation of the Equivalent Dose Limit for the Lens of the Eye for Occupational Exposure: Successes and challenges to the approaches identified through a survey of regulators”.

This report was produced by the NEA Expert Group on the Dose Limit for the Lens of the Eye (EGDLE) created in 2019 by the Committee on Radiological Protection and Public Health (CRPPH), with the objective of providing an opportunity for regulators and stakeholders to share lessons learned in the practical implementation of the International Commission on Radiological Protection’s (ICRP’s) recommended equivalent dose limit for the lens of the eye for occupational exposures. The report summarises the practical experiences of regulators and stakeholders worldwide, as well as successes and challenges to the approaches.

The workshop discussions with invited experts and researchers will focus on two themes:

  • the different aspects of the implementation of the dose limit for the lens in the workplace;
  • the research needs in this area to advance the aspects of radiological protection of the eye and/or to improve lens dosimetry.

The NEA also plans to provide a forum for the continued dialogue to enable countries to share information and experiences as they move forward with the implementation of dose limits for the lens of the eye in occupational exposure situations. Discussions will focus on sharing regulatory approaches, best practices and experiences, exchanging on advances in research on eye dosimetry and effects of radiation exposure on the lens of the eye, developments in eye dosimetry related to technologies, accreditation, technical and performance specifications and intercomparisons.

The forum will open in spring 2022 on dedicated NEA online platforms.
