Advancing geological repositories

Helsinki Finland

The NEA will host the Sixth International Conference on Geological Repositories (ICGR-6) on 4-8 April 2022 in Helsinki, Finland. Focused on the latest advancements in the field, the conference will convene high-level decision makers from responsible government ministries, regulatory bodies, representatives from waste management organisations, research institutes and local stakeholders, as well as young professionals and students.

Despite the existing consensus within the international community that geological repositories provide the necessary long-term safety and security for long-lived waste, challenges related to safety of repositories, public trust, availability of skilled staff and knowledge transfer remain in many countries. Involving younger generations has also become crucial for the sustainable development of geological disposals.

This year’s conference will address these topics through discussions, presentations and experience exchange. The Younger Generation Session will invite undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as young professionals to join the debate and network with peers.

Programme

The conference will feature exhibition booths showcasing advancements in technologies and geological repository development. Participants will also have the opportunity to visit the low- and intermediate-level waste repository facility (ONKALO) in Olkiluoto, Finland, as well as an exhibition of underground rock characterisation.

A hybrid option will be offered online for individuals unable to travel to the conference.

Registration

The conference is co-organised by the NEA and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment of Finland in co-operation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), European Commission and International Association for Environmentally Safe Disposal of Radioactive Materials.
