The 15th workshop on Shielding aspects of Accelerators, Targets and Irradiation Facilities (SATIF-15) was hosted by the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) in East Lansing, United States. Organised in a hybrid format – a novelty throughout its 28-year history – the workshop gathered 129 participants from 75 international institutions to promote information exchange among experts in the fields of radiation physics, and the application of ionising radiations in different fields of science and technology.

Experiment and facility related workshop highlights included presentations about the experimental programme of the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams and a tour of the new facility, presentations of novel high-precision measurements suited to challenge and improve nuclear physics models and the simulation tools, and novel techniques for solving operational problems and challenges.

Highlights with respect to radiation physics simulations included updates on new and emerging features of the computation tools including FLUKA, MARS, and PHITS, high resolution radiological assessments for large scale areas with automatised run-time optimisation for the simulation of deep penetration of radiation in shielding structures, machine learning driven design optimisations, and comprehensive benchmarking exercises.
