Survey

In order to better understand existing strategies and arrangements for implementing protective actions in the event of nuclear and radiological emergencies, the NEA has launched a survey to collect information from member countries to be incorporated into a revised version of the NEA’s Country Protective Measures Handbook. The survey was developed by the Task Group on update of Member Country Protective Measures Handbook (TGPMH) and was distributed to members of the NEA Working Party on Nuclear Emergency Matters (WPNEM) in March 2023.

The Country Protective Measures Handbook, previously published in 1994, 2003 and 2012, summarises the similarities and differences between member countries plans and procedures for radiological protective measures (now referred to as protective actions to reflect international developments in emergency preparedness and response terminology). The Handbook can be referred to at the time of an emergency and can also be used as a preparedness tool by providing other countries with a better understanding of the protective actions that may be implemented.

The survey collects information about:

  • Precautionary, urgent and early short-term protective actions;
  • Protective actions for emergency workers and helpers;
  • Information for the population on nuclear and radiological emergencies;
  • Preparedness for longer-term protective actions;
  • Harmonisation of protective actions.

Based on the survey results, the TGPMH will publish an updated version of the Country Protective Actions Handbook, which should be completed by the end of 2023.
